Climate Change is a word we see or hear on the news and in other media. Climate Change is long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural such as volcanic eruption. Human activities such as the burning of coal, gas, or oil also contribute to Climate Change.
Natural disasters are one of the impacts of Climate Change. The impact of Climate Change is visible in the small Island countries in the form of Cyclones and Rising Sea Levels. About five years back, Fiji law students proposed issuing a legal opinion on climate-related disasters. Vanuatu, an Island Nation impacted by a double Cyclone last year and Rising Sea Levels for the past few years, took the lead. On December 2, 2024, the International Court of Justice in Hague started the deliberations on the obligations to protect people and nature from climate change. This landmark case will have testimony from about 100 countries to provide advisory opinion.
The effect of Climate Change is visible in various facets of life, ranging from agriculture to natural disasters to rising sea levels. The opinion of the World Court in this largest-ever case is expected to clarify international law regarding climate change.
